EARTH DAY
I am Earth Day
As are we all
I am not one date
I am every day’s call
When every day is Earth Day
I am regenerative movement
Of the power structures at play
Remade in earth's power blooming
I am founded in historical injustice
Once fiery rivers, now-world lit with industrial chemicals
Replaced with clean rage and grief refilling us
When doing something about it is no longer polemical
I am organizing
Like the millions more deep in
Following foundations leads me to mobilizing
Because only together will we win
I am realizing there's no need to reinvent the wheel
When the wheel is the world and the world defines reinvention
In the way humanity invented the idea of pollution to conceal
The impact of emissions from wheels on combustion engines
All of that *gesture widely* I am widely aware of
Wide awake and aware there's so much more
I am at the grassroots, balancing fear and love
From root to blade-tip, to protect and restore
I am just one of millions billions
Of a movement of movements moving
Hearts, minds, coalitions of the caring and willing
Just trying to save heaps of habitats we’re losing
By spreading the word
Widening the circle of all who care
Your voice is your sword
Cutting through what’s up in the air
What we should keep in the ground
We should keep in the ground, now
Time is our resource most profound
Towards a carbon intensity countdown
I am more than a reminder
To protect our only planet every day
But more of a signal that the future requires
Living in ways that lets others live for more days
I am reducing, reusing, upcycling, conserving,
Reaching out, teaching out, reforesting, remediating
Trying and learning while planet-preserving,
Like compost fertilizer I am mitigating
But I am just one person
And with you, we're more
We can all do our part to help all take part
Any day or part of the earth is worth fighting for
Again and again, more are said to say
As our planetary crises scream it too:
I am Earth Day
And so are you.
